Each spring, the Borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro closely monitors changes in the level of the Rivière des Prairies and mobilises to be ready to intervene in the event of spring flooding. Find out more about the current situation.

The spring flooding period is well under way, and as a result our staff have been working behind the scenes since February to prepare for any eventuality. Our operations are working on a number of fronts: updating our contingency plans; training staff in the event of emergency measures being triggered; monitoring at-risk waterfront areas; adding new mitigation measures; managing human resources; acquiring new tools, including a new bagging machine to fill sandbags more efficiently; and renting industrial pumps.

Current situation: normal (watch mode)

To date, water levels and flows are slightly above seasonal averages in the northern region. However, the situation remains stable and encouraging, as the hydrological data recorded is still far from the minor flooding thresholds. As a result, no action is required on public land at present. According to the forecasts, water levels and flows should fall over the course of the week.

Although we are advantaged by the gradual melting of the snow cover in the northern basins, and by the small amounts of rain forecast over the next few days, it is still too early to rule out any possibility of spring flooding at the end of April and in May. Let’s hope that Mother Nature is gracious and let’s continue to be ready to intervene in the event of unexpected rises.
